In the News…

Escrachos/esculachos, or performance protests outing accused dictatorship-era perpetrators, continue. This week, around 100 people gathered to out coroner Harry Shibata, who helped falsify death certificates of murdered political activists. Echoing similar groups in Argentina, participants in the protests have adopted the slogan, “Se não há justiça, há esculacho popular” (which loosely translates as, In the absence of justice, we will out the perpetrators). Protesters are demanding that the Truth Commission subpoena Shibata to testify about human rights crimes during the authoritarian period. There are some great pictures of the escracho/esculacho here.
